17 March 2025Business Plan vs. Reality, or How to Spend Millions Before You Earn a Zloty
Dreams vs. first visit to the office
Anyone who has decided at least once in their life start a company, started with one – ambitious business plan. In our minds we see ourselves sitting in a modern office, drinking freshly ground coffee from the company coffee machine, while the account is being credited with invoices amounting to astronomical sums. But then reality comes…
The first bumper (read: the tax office) quickly corrects our optimistic assumptions. Because it turns out that before you earn your first zloty, you have to spend it – on a stamp, an accountant, a cash register, an invoicing system and (of course) a bun to console you after your visit to the office.
How to waste money on “essential” things?
The business plan is clear: investments should be sensible. But when we move to action, suddenly everything becomes absolutely necessary.
- Logo? You have to! Preferably from a graphic designer who charges like for Picasso.
- Website? It has to be awesome! SEO, responsiveness, chatbot and slow motion video.
- Place of work? Maybe coworking? Or maybe your own office with plants and a coffee machine right away, even though there are no clients yet?
Suddenly you realize that before you even start selling your services, you have a dozen or so invoices to pay and a new skill – negotiating payment terms.
Every great idea starts with a good business plan and ends with the question, "Why does it cost so much?"
Face to face with reality – first invoices and zero revenues
We finally did it – we have our first customer! You issue an invoice, you feel proud, but the money… somehow doesn’t show up. The customer claims that “payment is on its way” – unfortunately, probably on foot from the other side of the world.
Meanwhile, your expenses are growing. After all, the company has to operate: ZUS contributions won't pay themselves, the accountant doesn't work for charity, and the invoicing program suddenly wants a subscription after a free month.
A Lesson in Humility, or How to Not Go Crazy and Survive
After a few months you already know that:
- A logo for PLN 200 from the Internet also works.
- A coffee machine is not more important than financial liquidity.
- Instead of working in a coworking space, you can work from your couch.
- Customers pay, but not necessarily when you want them to.
After the first year you are wiser, richer (in experience) and more realistic. You already know that your business plan, your life, and running a business is not only about invoices and millions in revenue, but also a daily struggle for survival.
In theory, the business plan looked perfect until the first invoices and payment delays came
